Leadership Team

Mrs Lisa McVeigh BA(Hons), PGCE

Director of Deep Experience

Lisa joined Sherwood Hall School as a humanities teacher in 2002, later being appointed as Head of History and then Head of Humanities, later incorporating a four term secondment to the Senior Leadership Team. She began work in the Academy as Lead Teacher of Teaching and Learning in the Hardwick School and was appointed to the Senior Leadership Team in September 2009. She formerly taught at The Chafford School in the London Borough of Havering. After graduating from the University of East Anglia with an honours degree in History in 2000, she completed her teacher training at the Institute of Education, University of London. She has taught History, Geography and Religious Studies, including history at A-Level.

Mr Carl Storey BSc(Hons), PGCE

Director of Deep Support

Carl joined the Academy in January 2014 as Assistant Head Teacher in the Sherwood School. Carl spent seven years teaching at the Nottingham Academy, three of those years as the Head of Mathematics and two years as an Assistant Head Teacher. Prior to this Carl worked at Garibaldi College as a teacher of mathematics. Carl graduated from Lancaster University in 2000 with a degree in Mathematics and a year later studied for his PGCE teaching qualification at Nottingham University. Carl is driven by the value and importance of excellence in education, continuous improvement and raising aspirations in order to help the young people he works with to fulfil their potential and have a bright future.

Mr Carl Bennett BSc (Honours) with QTS

Team Director of Deep Experience

Carl joined Sherwood Hall School as a teacher of Physical Education in September 2002, later being appointed as Head of Boys’ PE. He began work in the Academy as Director of Sport and then as Team Leader of PE before being appointed to the Senior Leadership Team in September 2016. Since graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with an honours degree in PE with Qualified Teacher Status in 2002, he has taught PE to students from Year 7 through to those studying GCSE and A level Physical Education. Carl is passionate about making a difference to the lives of young people and is driven by the belief that every child can succeed, regardless of background or ability.

Mr Ian James BSc, PGCE

Team Director of Deep Learning

Ian joined the Academy in July 2010 as Assistant Head Teacher of the Sherwood School. Ian has spent ten years teaching at the Garibaldi School in Clipstone, Nottinghamshire, eight of those years as the Head of Mathematics. Prior to this Ian worked at the Meden School as a Mathematics teacher.Ian graduated from Leeds University in 1992 with a degree in Mathematics and a year later studied for his PGCE teaching qualification at Nottingham University. Even at this early stage in his career Ian knew he wanted to work with young people in Mansfield.

Mrs Maria Fletcher BA HONS PGCE

Team Director of Deep Learning

Maria joined the Academy in September 2008 as Professional Tutor and Teacher of Art. She spent the first part of her career teaching in Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, initially working as Lead Teacher of Art and additionally as an Advanced Skills Teacher. Maria completed her Art Foundation Course at Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1985, graduating from Manchester Polytechnic in 1988 with a degree in Fine Art Printmaking and a year later studying for her PGCE teaching qualification at Manchester Polytechnic. In September 2015 Maria was seconded to SLT, working as Lead teacher of Art, but also with a whole school oversight of ITT students, NQTs and whole staff CPD. In May 2016 she became a permanent member of SLT taking up the position of Team Director of Deep Learning. Maria is passionate about developing both staff and students to be ‘the best that they can be’.

Mrs Emma Mottram BA HONS PGCE (working towards NPQSL)

Team Director of Deep Support

Emma joined The Samworth Church Academy as an English teacher in 2011. She has taken on different responsibilities over the years within the English department, and went on to be the Head of English for some time. Emma was appointed to the senior leadership team in 2016, after studying for her NPQSL (National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership) over the preceding year, as well as being involved in Teaching and Learning working parties and other continuous improvement groups. She graduated with honours from the University of Leeds in 2007 and went on to become a trainer for new employees in a global financial services company. She then studied for her English PGCE at the University of Nottingham in 2010, after which time she joined us. Emma has taught all key stages of English and Media, including A’ Level English Literature. Emma is driven by a desire to improve all outcomes for the young people of this community. She strives to ensure all students have access to excellent standards of education to enable them to be the best they can be, now and in the future.
