Students Selected To Compete At National Schools Cross Country Championships

Emma Wilkinson (Year 13) and Alice Mortiboy (Year 10) have been selected to represent Nottinghamshire at the English Schools Cross Country Championships in Manchester on 20th March 2010.

They have both had successful seasons so far competing at the district and county championships.  The Nottinghamshire Schools Championships were held at Berry Hill Park in February and Alice finished 7th in the Intermediate Girls' race, with Emma 4th in the Senior Girls' event.  These results enabled both girls to be selected to attend the National finals, competing against the best for their age group from across England.  Good luck to them both!

Another 11 students from the Academy also represented Mansfield at the Nottinghamshire Schools Cross Country Championships.  The students all competed to the best of their ability in very cold contitions and were a credit to themselves and the Academy.

County Plate Rugby Final

After a hard fought trek to the final of the County Plate, Samworth were confident of victory despite entering a match against a team that had previously beat them.

From the kick off Dukeries showed their strength, with most of the first 15 minutes of play being played in Samworth's half, but Samworth showed great determination, defending against many penalties near the try line and after winning the ball back their grit was rewarded with veteran try-scorer Jan Jankiewicz running the ball over the line after avoiding many tackles along the way.

After this the pressure on Samworth lightened a little but their defence didn't falter as they defended assault after assault but Samworth's superior lineout and scrum helped them win the ball back and after finally getting the ball down the back line Jan once again worked his running magic and a conversion by Kieran Patel made the score 14-0 to Samworth.

Ashley Esam had been sin binned for ten minutes by the referee and many thought that Samworth may falter but this proved to be untrue after James Crisp caught a bad Dukeries pass and ran the ball over the line for try number 3.  Samworth showed their dominance and 10 minutes later sheer strength and good passing work got them to the Dukeries try line.  The Dukeries conceded a penalty in this area and Ashley Esam made up for his absence by powering through the Dukeries defence and the score was 24-0.  In the last ten minutes fatigue started to affect the brave Samworth team and a relentless Dukeries attack finally broke the Samworth defence, scoring and converting twice to make the final score 24-14.  The team celebrated their win in a customary style, spraying water everywhere and are very proud of what is a hugh high point for their season.

Samworth Students Dance Alongside Royal Ballet Students

In September 2009 30 students in Years 7 - 9 were priviledged to take part in technical and choreography workshops which were delievered by The Royal Ballet School at the Academy.

This was an incredible experience for all involved and it broadened many of the students' knowledge and appreciation of Ballet.

Hayley Grainger, Chloe Patel, Katherine Bradford and Ebony Kirkland went on to successfully audition to take part in the aDvANCE dance group, an initiative ran by The Royal Ballet School.  In Mansfield this partnership comprises of Dance4, The Brunts School, Meden School, Samworth Church Academy and Queen Elizabeth's Schools and is one of only five aDvANCE groups in England.

On Wednesday 24th March, after six months of workshops and rehearsals, our four lucky dancers took to the stage alongside students from the Royal Ballet School in a celebratory evening to mark the culmination of The Royal Ballet School's first year of partnership in Mansfield.  The evening was inspiring and a privilege for Samworth to be involved in such a fantastic project.

We very much look forward to continuing the involvement in the partnership next year.
