So far this season has seen our Year 7 football stars have stolen the show by making an unbeaten start scoring a whopping 39 goals and conceding only three in five games.
The first of their victories came in round one of the ESFA (English schools football association) where the team ran out comfortable 11-0 winners over Tupton Hall. Since then they have shone throughout their journey to round four of the competition with a 2-1 and 9-0 victory over Newbridge High and Bolsover School respectively.
In the County Cup the team are awaiting a third round match at Arnold Hill after a Bye in the first round. This then led to a fantastic hard fought victory away to West Bridgeford with a 2-1 scoreline to ensure our place in round three.
Our biggest victory came in round one of the town cup as the year 7 team produced a masterclass performance to progress to the quarter finals with a 15-1 demolition over Kirkby College. Our reward is an away fixture to Jo Whit with a semi-final place at stake.
Our first game was against Garibaldi, one of two teams that we haven't played yet this year. Garibaldi were looking strong with a couple of fast players on the wings. Garibaldi kicked off but Samworth stole the ball and Owen Clarke ran in easily for his first try of the day, but certainly not the last. We were in charge of the match for long periods of time, all our efforts paid off as Marc Taylor-Marsh, Elliott Severn, Sam Murphy a.k.a Smurphy and Owen Clarke all scored making the final score 6-0 to Samworth. But all of this could not be achived without the entire team putting in the efforts they did.
Next we played Dukeries, who were a far better team than Garibaldi, they had good stints on the ball but never broke the line of defence. All the team played extremly well as we drove their maul backwards and then ripped the ball, our efforts were paid off as Jake Baldry ploughed over the line for a hat-trick of tries. Owen Clarke jinked through and crossed the line for one final try, as he did this he slotted the ball through is legs in a show off style which got everybody laughing.
Samworth had three experienced club players who controlled the game well, but the best part was the way the new players stood up to the huge Ashfield pack and tackled all the match, the game was won by the combined efforts of all the boys. The Ashfield comp boys crossed the line for one try. SCORE 5 tries to 1.
Squad...
Elliott Severn, Jake Baldry, Sam Murphy, Joeseph Allen, Wiliam Smith, Owen Clarke, Jacob Fidler, Aaron Kent, Edan Lisseman-Stones, Ted Beech, Cameron Brunt and Marc Taylor-Marsh all played extremly well and we deserved the result we got.

The year 7 rugby team played the first rugby matches of the year in a tournament at Quarrydale school, reports Elliott Severn and Jake Baldry.
The first match was against Ashfield comprehensive School who fielded some huge forwards in the centre of their line, but after the first try was scored by Owen Clarke it looked like samworths pace on the outside was going to be crucial. Owen jinked through for two tries, Jake Baldry crashed over for two tries, and Elliott Severn finished them off with a snipe round the side.

The second match was against the hosts Quarrydale who had fielded two teams and looked strong. The game started with a sustained Quarrydale attack but Samworth forced the attackers backwards in the tackle and soon pushed them into touch to hand the ball over to Samworth. Samworth scored quickly for the rest of the match, and moved to a 9 tries to nil victory. The try scorers were, Owen Clarke, Jake Baldry, Sam Murphy, Elliott Severn, and Edan Lisseman-Stones.
Again Samworth seemed to have too much pace strength and aggression in the tackle, and know how for Quarrydale.
Unfortunately Garabaldi school had to leave as we ran out of time, but we couldn’t help but think that they didn't fancy a tough match, and left for home.
Great tackling from all the team and good commitment gave SamworthChurch Academy a clear advantage.
Rugby club is on a Tuesday after school please pop along and join a successful side.
An amazing way to start the season.
Team: Elliott Severn (10), Ted Beech (10), Marc Taylor Marsh (10), Jake Baldry (10), Sam Murphy (10), Owen Clarke (10), Will Smith (Inj, 10), Edan Stones (10), Joseph Allen (10), Tom Butts (10), Cameron Brunt (10), Chris Marques (10), Jacob Fidler (10), Aaron Kent (10).
Our team was made up of only 3 Year 10s in the starting line-up and the rest were a Year 9s so the task was always going to be a tough one when playing up a year with so many lads, particularly when their lads get 4 hours of rugby a day, play weekend fixtures and have specifically employed Rugby coaches to work with them!
This aside, we came away with our heads held high and full of compliments from the opposing sides coaches and supporters. The lads played incredibly well and if we were against the usual Mansfield and Nottingham sides we would have without doubt wiped the floor with them. Our tackling was excellent and the shape we are beginning to show from breakdowns and running the ball was really pleasing. The boys have started to understand the game a lot more and convey this into their play rather than just following the action from pillar to post.
In particular Tom Quinn, Chris Smith, Christian Thompson, Josh Jordan, Ryan Cattell, Ryan Hayward and Declan Copock played incredibly well and the tackling from Tom was awesome with a great try saving tackle from Chris Smith who is the most unassuming of characters and seems to be really enjoying his first experiences of rugby!
We are currently embarking on a close relationship the Mansfield RFC who are letting us play our Home fixtures on their pitches and in return we are channelling our boys into their club. We also have a significant amount of coaching hours from Steve Shaw who works as a Rugby Development Coach across the region and at Mansfield RFC, who spends time with our lads during curriculum and wider curriculum time. We can’t get 4 hours a day but we're trying so watch this space! Our one aim at the minute is to beat Ashfield - when we do – we ll have a county championship side rather than runners up and we'll be starting to compete against the independent schools first teams.
Lots to do but its well worth it!!!
