Samworth Designers Plan The Future Look Of Mansfield

Lindhurst design competition winners Jordan Evers, Abbie Woodward and Amy Wright (Year 7) spent the day at FPCR design consultants getting some idea of what happens when a sketch becomes a plan!

The girls spent the day with Dan Houghton, a landscape designer, at FCPR offices based at Lockington Hall near Derby.   Having made initial sketches for the planned development (so winning the competition set by Richard Bowden of Bowdenland) the girls were given the task of putting their plans onto the computers to form a 3D image of their park.

Following a tour of the Grade II listed building (we were very impressed with the staircase: architects please note - can we have one like it in the new school please!) the girls had a quick introduction to the design software.

None of the girls had done anything like this before and were understandably nervous - what if they lost the plan?  What if they made a mistake?  Dan quickly reassured them that mistakes were easily rectified and off they went.  Lunch was provided and a tour of the outside of the building, including a croquet lawn.  We really wanted to play but no-one was available.  Maybe they feared we would thrash them . . .  It was back into the office after lunch to complete the work and see a printed plan of the site, complete with images of cars, trees, etc.

All agreed it had been a very interesting day and seeing their plans being modelled was fantastic!

Academy Dance Spectacular

Samworth Church Academy students have showcased their dance and performance skills in a spectacular show held at Sutton Centre's theatre.  The performance involved the participation of 120 students ranging in age from 11 years to 16 years old.

The talented students presented many styles of dance including contemporary, break dancing, Capoeira and also a performance of Bollywood style dancing.

The GCSE and BTEC dancers performed Fosse's 'The Rich Man's Frug' from the musical Sweet Charity which was very warmly received by the audience.  The Frug (pronounced 'froog') was a dance craze from the 1960s.

Samworth Church Academy's Curriculum Leader of Dance, Hannah Lake said 'It was delightful to see many dancers performing for the first or second time in a public performance who clearly enjoyed themselves and whose confidence and development in dance has flourished'.

Academy Buries A Time Capsule

Samworth Church Academy students have buried a time capsule on the site of their new Academy building.  Pupils chose a number of current items to go in the airtight capsule including a copy of the Chad newspaper, a mobile phone, drawings and poems by the Academy students.

Pupils chose a number of items to go in the airtight capsule including a copy of the Chad newspaper, a mobile phone, drawings and poems by the Academy students.  The items are a representative sample of what students thought would be illustrative of life in 2010.

The capsule was sealed and is set to be reopened in 50 years time.  An inscribed slab will mark the location outside of the entrance to the new, state of the art building.

Samworth Church Academy student Matthew Fidler said "It was interesting thinking what school life might be like when times change - will the lessons be the same, will the hours be the same, will school even exist as we know it today?"

Jane Rusk, Samworth Church Academy's Foundation Manager said "As the new building is nearing completion we asked our pupils to reflect upon life in Mansfield now and what it might be like in 2060.  Items for the time capsule included present day planners, items of school uniform, newspapers and examples of student work.  We hope it will inform generations about our life as it is today."
